    Dr. Laing is a prosthodontist and immunologist who specializes in research and clinical treatment pertaining to the causative agents of “dry mouth” (xerostomia or hyposalivation) such as various auto-immune disorders (in particular Sjögren’s Syndrome), from medication usage (of which over 1000 are associated with dryness), as a result of HIV/AIDs, or having been treated with immuno- or radiation therapy for head-and-neck cancers.  She is Assistant Professor, Faculty of Dentistry and is also the president of the Sjögren’s Society of Canada.

The course will address several areas pertaining to the auto-immune disorder of Sjögren’s Syndrome (SS) including an inter-active component. Such topics as major symptoms, diagnostic criteria, and early biomarkers will be presented. Oral aspects of SS will be highlighted including dental deterioration, treatment options, the prognosis of removable dentures vs. implant-supported prostheses, and methods to rehydrate the mouth.

  • To appreciate and experience via simulation the oral manifestations of Sjögren’s Disease/Syndrome (SS)
  • To gain an understanding of the extent of the debilitation with respect to quality of life (QoL)
  • To recognize the treatment strategies available to manage the dental deterioration through traditional and non-traditional means.
