    Dr. David Chvartszaid [pronounced shwarts-zaid] is a double specialist in Prosthodontics and Periodontics with a history of professional leadership and a strong commitment to patient care. Dr. Chvartszaid is the director of the MSc/Specialty Program in Prosthodontics at the University of Toronto and is the dentist-in-chief at Baycrest Hospital. Dr. Chvartszaid is the associate editor of the Ontario Dentist journal, an examiner for the Royal College of Dentists of Canada (RCDC) and National Dental Examining Board (NDEB), and the vice-president of the Association of Prosthodontists of Canada. At the international level, Dr. Chvartszaid serves as the scientific co-chair of the 2019 meeting of the International College of Prosthodontists in Amsterdam and as the reviewer for several international specialty journals.

    Dr. Chvartszaid’s education includes hospital residencies in New York city and dual specialty training at the University of Toronto where he also completed two master’s degrees. His research focuses on optimizing implant treatment outcomes. Dr. Chvartszaid lectures extensively nationally and internationally on various topics related to prosthodontics, periodontics, and implant dentistry. In the last few years, Dr. Chvartszaid has lectured in Chile, Czech Republic, Germany, Hong Kong, Iran, Italy, Kenya, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Taiwan, Turkey, and all across Canada and the US.

    Dr. Chvartszaid’s specialty practice successfully merges prosthodontic, implant surgical and periodontal approaches to address the patients’ needs. His diverse clinical practice includes patients from all over Canada with difficult-to-treat or difficult-to-diagnose dental challenges.

The number of Canadians living to be 100 years old continues to grow! We need to learn how to help this new generation of SuperAgers live quality lives. The Department of Dentistry at Mount Sinai Hospital is pleased to present a jam-packed day of learning with our annual Update in Dentistry Symposium. The program will consist of lectures and workshops from our top experts in geriatric medicine, dental anesthesia, prosthodontics, periodontics, oral and maxillofacial surgery, oral and maxillofacial radiology, oral and maxillofacial pathology and oral medicine, special care dentistry, endodontics and dental public health.

Did you know: In 2018, there were 9,457 centenarians in Canada, and that number has consistently increased year over year. In 2022, there were 13,485, according to Statistics Canada. That’s about a 43 per cent increase over four years.

Objectives

After active participation in this program, participants will:

  1. Possess current and relevant knowledge to provide comprehensive and appropriate care for the older patient now referred to as the young-old.
  2. Understand the role of the dental team in the integrated, interprofessional approach to patient care
  3. Effectively manage dental care in complex medical and polypharmacy scenarios
  4. Assess and dentally manage common geriatric syndromes that impact dental care
  5. Examine the implications of living longer on clinical practice and think long term about treatment decisions and restorations
